Influence of Auxin , Ethylene , and Polyamines on the Flowering Induction of Morning Glory (Pharbitis nil Chois . cv . Violet)

Abstract
IBA, BA, GA©ý, ACC, STS, and polyamines were treated on the cotyledon of Pharbitis nil Chois. cv. Violet at the different times of 16 hrs dark induction to investigate the role of polyamines and mediation of ethylene on flowering response inhibition of auxintreated short day plant. IBA treatment before dark period was fewer than treatment after dark period in the number of flower per plant (1.7 vs 3.1) and terminal flowering rate (6% vs 44%). But GA©ý treatments after/before dark period were not different significantly at the number of flowers per plant and terminal flowering rate, and BA treatments had the same results. IBA application showed stimulation of ethylene biosysthesis as well as inhibition of flowering response. ACC and STS treatments, however, increased ethylene production, but never inhibited flowering response. On the other hand, 1mM Putrescine (Put) decreased ethylene production and increased the number of flowers per plant with a complete induction of terminal flowering. Only Put among polyamines treated at 8 hr after dark induction reversed flowering inhibition induced by auxin treated at immediately before dark induction. In addition, all of Put, Spermidine (Spd), and Spermine (Spm) reversed auxin induced flowering inhibition when they treated immediately after 16 hr dark induction. However, auxin application during dark period did not inhibit flowering response when polyamines were pretreated. These results indicated that inhibition of the photoperiodic flower induction by auxin in Pharbitis nil Chois. cv. Violet was not mediated by ethylene and even though it is uncertain whether the reverse action between polyamine and auxin was mediated by ethylene, they acted as antagonist in flowering response of Pharbitls nil Chois. cv. Violet.
